The Tunisian Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) announced on 22 December that veteran politician Beji Caid Essibsi has won Tunisia's first free presidential elections with 55.68 per cent of the vote. The commission said his rival, outgoing President Moncef Marzouki, had received 44.32 per cent of the ballots. A swearing-in ceremony for Essebsi is scheduled for 31 December.
